Diabetes mellitus, commonly referred to as diabetes is a chronic disease which affects the blood sugar levels in your system and your body's ability to use the energy in your food.

Because of unhealthy lifestyle and unhealthy diet, people are getting more and more prone of being diabetic. According to new studies, 25% of the public do not know they have that condition. So, here we give you the top warning signs and symptoms of diabetes mellitus.

If you experience some of these, it's best to consult your physician right away.

1. Frequent urination

Since your body cannot completely break down food into sugar, the excess sugar in your bloodstream is flushed out through your urine. Check how many times you go to the loo. If it keeps you up at night, affecting your ability to sleep, that could be a red flag you need to pay attention to.

2. Sudden weight loss

According to a health doctor, “Weight loss comes from two things. One, from the water that you lose [from urinating]. Two, you lose some calories in the urine and you don’t absorb all the calories from the sugar in your blood.”

3. Always hungry

“When you have high blood sugar, your body has a problem regulating its glucose. If you’ve eaten something high in carbohydrates, your body shoots out a little too much insulin, and your glucose drops quickly. This makes you feel shaky, and you tend to crave carbs or sugar. This can lead to a vicious cycle," says Marjorie Cypress, a nurse practitioner at an endocrinology clinic in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and 2014 president of health care and education for the American Diabetes Association

4. Mood swings, always irritable and tired

High blood sugar can take off depression-like symptoms. You feel tired but you are not doing anything. You just want to sleep all day. You think you need to be treated for depression when all that needs to be done is normalize your blood sugar level.

5. Small wounds heal slowly or does not heal at all

When your sugar levels are high, your immune system and the processes that help your body heal don't work.

6. Numbness in the hands or feet

Because of elevated sugar levels, one of the complications is mild nerve damage that causes numbness in your hands or feet

7. Susceptible to urinary tract and yeast infection

“Usually when you keep getting infections, doctors will check for diabetes if you don’t already have it. Even women who go to the emergency room for urinary tract infections are often checked," says Cypress. This is because of higher levels of sugar in your urine and vagina that creates a breeding ground for bacteria and yeast.

8. Always thirsty

Because you urinate a lot, you feel thirstier than usual. Instead of taking sugary beverages like soda or juice, fill yourself with water. These sugary substances can give you excess sugar that leads to the problem all over again.

9. Sexual problems

When the blood sugar levels in the body becomes too hard to manage, it eventually damages the nerves and arteries in the genital area, that leads to poor sexual performance or loss of sensation.

10. Blurry vision

Because of the high level of blood sugar from your tissues and the changing level of fluid in your body, the lenses of your eyes swell up, affecting your focus. If left undetected and untreated, you could eventually lose your vision.
