Keratosis pilaris has lots of names. Also known as KP, follicular keratosis, lichen pilaris, or in layman's term "chicken skin", is a common skin condition wherein small rough patches, acne-like bumps appear on your arms, cheeks, thighs, or buttocks. Sometimes it's itchy, sometimes it's red, other times it's white.

While it's not deadly, chicken skin can take a person's confidence especially when it becomes inflamed and starts to form a scar.

This skin condition commonly appears to children but adults may also experience it.

Symptoms of Keratosis Pilaris

  • Small white or red bumps, typically on the upper arms, legs, buttocks or cheek
  • Dry, rough and sometimes itchy skin in the areas with bumps
  • Worsens in seasons when skin starts to dry

Causes

Chicken skin starts when your keratin - a hard protein that shields your skin from harmful infection-begins to buildup.

The overproduction of keratin blocks the skin pores resulting to patches of rough, bumpy skin.

This condition is hereditary, so it is possible that it may be passed to your children or grandchildren. According to studies, a part of it may be because of your skin's dryness or hypersensitivity reactions.
