Vaginal itching is very common to women of all ages. In fact, it is one of the common problems most of them face.

At times, the uncontrollable genital itching is paired with burning sensation which further irritates the vagina. And this gives discomfort when urinating or having sex.

At some point, you may feel a swelling and redness inside or outside the vulva with others having discharge or foul smell. Other factors to look at are tight clothes and lack of hygiene.

Home remedies

Cold Compress

When itching bothers you at nighttime, this can be an instant solution. It will numb the affected part and stops the itching
  • Put ice cubes or cold compress directly to the itching vagina
  • Let it sit for a few minutes
  • Do this until the itching stops

Garlic

Be very careful when using garlic. Although it has antibacterial properties, it is very strong and using it without causing may burn your skin.
  • Take garlic supplements prescribed by your doctor
  • Chew 2-3 cloves of garlic daily
  • Mix a small amount of garlic oil and a teaspoon of vitamin E oil together then apply it on your vagina. Leave it for 10 minutes before rinsing with warm water. Do this twice a day until the inflammation and itching stops.

Salt water

Like garlic, salt contains antibacterial properties that prevents further spread of bacteria. Just an advice: Don't use it if you have open wounds
  • Pour 1/2 cup of salt into your warm bath. Sit in it in a squatting position and use your fingers to open your vaginal walls so the salted water will effectively kill the bacteria.
  • You can also wash your vagina with a glass of water mixed with 1 teaspoon of salt

Basil leaves

It has anti bacterial, anti-microbial and anti fungal properties that can lessen or stop the irritation.
  • Boil the leaves in water for 20 minutes and drink it twice a day to fight the vaginal bacteria

Yogurt

The pure, unsweetened yogurt contains probiotics that your system needs. It has active cultures that controls the spread of infection in the body by replacing the bad bacteria with a lot of good bacteria. Yogurts are also the best cure for yeast infections.
  • Drink 1 cup of plain, unsweetened yogurt daily

Apple cider vinegar

The antifungal properties of apple cider vinegar takes care of the bacteria causing the infection and removes the itching completely. It makes the vagina acidic that bacteria cannot live in it.
  • Mix 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar into a glass of warm water. Use it to wash your vagina twice a day for three days or until the itching stops.

Antibacterial powder

This herbal talc is mild but takes the affected area longer time to heal.
  • Apply the talc in the vagina to fight the bacteria caused by the moist area

Kefir

Like yogurt, this fermented dairy product is rich in probiotics such as bifidus and lactobacillus that helps get rid of yeast and bacteria that causes vaginal itching.
  • Consume at least 2 cups of kefir everyday for two weeks.

Rosemary leaves

Rosemary possesses antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties that effectively fights bacteria.
  • Steep rosemary leaves in water for 15 minutes.
  • Let it cool
  • Wash vagina with the solution

Unpasteurized honey

Its antimicrobial properties help stop the vaginal infection
  • Apply honey on the vagina and leave it for half an hour. Rinse it with warm water aferwards
  • Daily take at least two tablespoons of honey with a glass of warm water to boost immune system. 

Unsweetened Cranberry

It helps make the vulva and its surrounding acidic enough that bacteria cannot thrive in it.
  • Drink two glasses of cranberry juice a day. 
  • Alternatively, you can also opt for cranberry tablets as prescribed by doctor

Change in Lifestyle

  • Exercise daily and eat healthy food
  • Wear cotton underwears and change it twice a day
  • Wipe your vagina after using the toilet
  • Don't use heavily scented soaps on your vagina
  • Don't use conditioners or bleach when washing your underwear as it may irritate your skin
  • Immediately take a shower after swimming or workout 
  • Take less sugar when suffering from yeast infection as it may worsen the symptom
