According to studies, prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer among men. This condition mostly occurs in men over 50 years old and the risk of prostate enlargement increases when they reach the age of 80.

With this, many are looking for ways they can protect themselves from developing such disease.

Good news!

Research reveals that pumpkin seeds can actually prevent prostate cancer. They contain powerful components such as phytosterols, omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids, alpha-linolenic acid and zinc that fights the development of the disease. Let's look at them one by one.

Phytosterols

Also known as beta-sitosterol, this is often found in almost all plants. However, pumpkin seeds and its oil contain the highest concentration of  this natural component.

Omega 3

This essential fatty acid prevents the inflammation and enlargement of prostate.

Omega 6

Also known as Linoleic Acid, this is found in pumpkin seed oil. It reduces the risk of prostate cancer and lessens the symptoms of benigh enlargement. Among the many functions of thsi essential fatty acid is it helps in the production of sexual hormones thus correcting the imbalances in ones body.

Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)

Pumpkin seeds contain a high content of this essentail fatty acid which also has anti-inflammatory properties that help cut down prostate inflammation

Zinc

Pumpkin seeds have long been known to be the source of zinc. This mineral has anti-oxidant that averts the inflammation of the prostate. Plus, it also acts as protection from oxidative DNA damage in prostate cells, improves DNA repair and regulates spread of cells.

Men at risk of prostate inflammation and prostate cancer should consume food items that are rich in these important components particularly those with essential fatty acids because these cannot be produced by our body.

NOTE: Do NOT use pumpkin seeds to treat prostate cancer. It is advised to consult your doctor first.
